I am 30 years old hypothyroid and married for last 1 year. I am diagnosed with PCOS which was almost borderline. Both Hypothyroid and PCOS are fairly common problems among women. With PCOS infertility is due to ovulatory dysfunction commonly characterized by polycystic ovaries depending upon severity. I started to feel like phoenix. Tired and worn of reading about the consequences and the fear that will I ever bear my own child. The world seems like flames but a good guidance and consultation brought a new purpose….and we could rise stronger than before. The first truth is PCOS manifests itself differently in each woman it afflicts. Every woman wonders …Am I the one with infertility? Is it so that her medication will help me ? Am I the one frustrated and alone ? Doctor told me that my ovary has a large no. of follicles which remain immature never growing to full development or ovulating to produce a good quality egg capable of being fertilised. In addition other features are irregular periods , excessive hair growth and fat depending upon individual. These symptoms are related to several internal changes.
Hormonal abnormalities, including: raised luteinising hormone (LH) in the early part of the menstrual cycle, raised androgens (male hormones usually found in women in tiny amounts), lower amounts of the blood protein that carries all sex hormones (sex-hormone-binding globulin) , a small increase in the amount of insulin and cellular resistance to its actions.
Characteristic changes in the appearance of the ovaries on ultrasound scan. The ovaries are polycystic, with many small follicles scattered under the surface of the ovary (usually more than 10 or 15 in each ovary) and almost none in the middle of the ovary. These follicles are all small and immature, generally do not exceed 10mm in size and rarely, if ever, grow to maturity and ovulate.
Most women with PCOS will have the ultrasound findings, whereas the menstrual cycle abnormalities are found in around 66 per cent of women and obesity is found in 40 per cent. The increase in hair and acne are found in up to 70 per cent whereas the hormone abnormalities are found in up to 50 per cent of women. After blood tests on 3rd day of cycle I was on the most effective medication of Letrazole for 5 days in continuation with Metformin (most efficient updated drug for PCOS) , folic acid and ecosprin ( supports pregnancy). With the series of ultrasound my ovulation was enhanced by GMH 150 IU injections.
We finally got our miracle on second month of treatment through IUI. I constantly think about a phase which we passed through which most of my fellow women pass and it made me realize that how a women can feel so alone in their quest to get a handle on this confusing disorder PCOS. Find everything that’s on your mind bcos PCOS can be managed with proper treatment and diagnosis as in my case. I am on a new journey towards life. I wish to continue sharing experiences of my pregnancy in PCOS. Please feel free to ask
